Recently I updated my personal fashion style. I have been wearing the same clothing style since I was in High School and I am already in my third year in college. Since my interests and the way I perceived things have changed, I thought it was time to update my style. Today I am sharing the 5 easy steps that I took to find my personal style. There is a workbook that you can download for FREE!
Step 1: What do you love?
When I was defining my personal style I started my research in my closet. I encourage you to do the same. Don’t skip this step, I assure you this first step will make finding your style 10x easier. Like I said, start at you closet. Take out your favorite pieces and build an outfit, from what you already own, that you wouldn’t mind wearing everyday for the rest of your life. If you can’t assemble a complete outfit, stick to the pieces that you truly love. Do not exceed from 5 pieces. The choose 3 to 5 pieces from your wardrobe that you never wear or you don’t like anymore.
This simple exercise just made finding your style 10x easier. Let me explain why. By knowing what you already love from your wardrobe you basically built your personal style. The items that you chose are the pieces that define you in fashion terms. When building your wardrobe and style you will stick to the colors, style and fit that you already love and keep away from the pieces that you hate. Even though this is a good base to start with, don’t be afraid to experiment with new things every now and then.
Step 2: Who inspires you?
I am sure that every time you watch your tv or read magazine you probably admire someones sense of fashion. For step 2 make a list of people whose style you admire and love. You can think about celebrities, characters, family, friends or even that Instagram girl or guy you follow… anyone really. Try to stick to only 4 people.
Shop the Look
Once you have found the people who inspire you fashion wise. Think about what exactly do you like about their style. Is it the way they mix prints? Or the bold colors that they wear? Is it their minimalistic style? When building your wardrobe you will have this is mind.
Step 3: The ultimate Pinterest Board
This is definitely my favorite step. Everyone has a Pinterest account and if you don’t then you should really jump in the wagon. No, really go and set a Pinterest account you will be obsessed. Create a new board with the vision that you have created so far. This board will include the colors and style that you love (from step 1) and the inspiration from step 2. Have fun with it.
Create a board that reflects who you are and your aspirations fashion wise. Add outfits that you will love to recreate (with a personal spin of course) and your inspiration of choice (form step to). But do not only limit yourself to that you can pin color palettes and even nature pictures. Everything that inspires you and contribute to defining your style is worth of pinning. Even though I know that without knowing we can go crazy pinning thousands of pictures try to keep your board to no more than 30 pins to start with. Doing this will decrease the possibilities of you feeling overwhelmed.
When your board is done don’t forget to share it with me @sheblushesblog for a chance of featuring your board on future posts!
Step 4: Do your fashion research
After creating your board it’s time to experiment with your new personal fashion style. Go look around at the mall and try outfits you put together based on you new style. You can even go to a website called Polyvore where you can put together outfits with pieces from different online and retail stores. If you make a collage don’t forget to share it on Instagram and use the tag #shewears for a chance to be featured.
Step 5: Build Your Wardrobe
Now this step depends of what are you planning to do. I encourage you to build your wardrobe gradually. This will help you define further your style by trial and error. Don’t be afraid of trying things that are out of your confort zone every now and then.
Don’t forget to show off your new personal fashion style by posting a picture on Instagram and using the tag #shewears for a chance to be featured on my blog or Instagram.
